TEDxWomen -- Jennifer Siebel Newsom

Uploaded on Dec 11, 2011
Jennifer Siebel Newsom is a filmmaker, actress, spokesperson and advocate. She talks about how the media shapes our perceptions about gender and about our potential, calling on women and men to challenge the media and its male-dominated discourse, while empowering women to take on leadership positions.

TEDxWomen was curated and produced by The Paley Center for Media. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. Dr. Deyamport,
This video was absolutely phenomenal! So much truth was spoken by Mrs. Newsom that I don't even know where to begin to comment. I also believe that this country, along with many parts of the rest of the world, is in a dark place with ambition and goal-setting in women's lives. We have gotten to an awful place where a woman's looks determine everything she will ever be, and this puts us all in grave danger and moving forward. If we are able to advance in every other aspect of the world, how is it that gender standards and roles have receded? As Mrs. Newsom said, I believe that if we fight this mindset and encourage learning and high standards for women into the media, we can save the future of the female population. I thoroughly enjoyed this video post, and I hope to read more like this one in the future!
